By Patrick Mothapo
Orlando pirates are the only team in southern Africa to have won Africa champions league back in 1995. This season bucs aim to win it for the second time. Their preliminary round was against the team from Comoros Island, Djabal. Their first match played at Orlando stadium in South Africa. They have won that game by five goals to nil of Djabal. The Zimbabwean international Takesure “Makesure” Chinyama scored 4 out of 5 goals that night while Sifiso Myeni scored once to make it 5.
The second leg took place in Comoros Island, where pressure applied to the hosts. The weather was not in favour of these two teams as it was extremely hot there with 39 degrees Celsius. Pirates were leading by 5 goals to nil of Djabal on aggregate. The game started at 15h00 Comoros Island time, in South Africa it was 14h00. Pirates found the back of the net moment after the game started. That was an advantage of an away goal rule. Djabal had to score 7 goals to win the game. On the 8th minutes Mabena connects from Mbuyane’s cross to put Pirates in front by 2goals to nil. The Djabal players have resorted to kicking anything that moves. They were under pressure. Immediately after ten minutes in the second half, Takesure ensure that his scoring tally extended to 5 as he netted the third goal for the buccaneer. Djabal had to score ten goals against Pirates that was not going to be impossible.
Some say Djabal was an inexperienced team to play Pirates. The tournament is for the champion from around the continent. Djabal is the champion of Comoros. The standard of football in Comoros is very low compare to the South African football. Orlando pirates ended that game by 4 goals to nil of Djabal. Aggregate Pirates scored 9 goals to 0 of Djabal.
Their next game in champion’s league will be against Zanaco from Zambia in the 2nd round of the CAF champion’s league. Zanaco through to the next round after played a goalless draw against Mbabane Swallows, aggregate 3-2.
